Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
